Can a Successful MLM Business Really be Built Part-Time?

One of the attractions of joining a Network Marketing company is the ability to do it part-time which means you can do it in addition to your current job. On paper this would seem the perfect way to make some additional income with the ultimate goal being to replace your full-time income. So what exactly constitutes as part-time?

For most people, a full-time job means working the hours of 9-5 so part-time would mean anything outside of that. In reality however, part-time commitment in network marketing should not require every available hour you have outside of your full-time working hours otherwise you would not be able to do anything else and you would probably be better off getting a conventional part-time job.

Your sponsor may have told you that you only need to commit a few hours a week and the very minimum you need to do is attend the weekly business presentation. However, in most cases this would not be sufficient to build a successful organization, at least not in a very short period of time.

Next I am going to breakdown, how much time you would realistically need to spend on the different activities in order to have a successful business (using offline strategies) and then you can decide for yourself if part-time is in fact part-time you can fit in:

Weekly Business Presentations: (Minimum: 3 hours per week)

This is the core of your business and the minimum required of you, if you are building it via the traditional system i.e. offline. Meetings vary with each company and the respective host or presenter but on average a presentation should last no more than 1 and 1/2 hours. You then have to take into account travel time to the venue which could be anything between 10 minutes to 2 hours each way, dependant on how far you need to travel. You then also need to take into consideration the time you need to spend closing your guests after the presentation, this should take a maximum of 30 minutes but depends on how many guests you have and whether they have more questions about everything.

Inviting: (Minimum: 30 minutes per week)

If you do this right, this should only take you a few minutes a day. If you follow the way your sponsor and trainers have taught you, you should not be spending more than 5 minutes on the phone inviting your prospect to a presentation. This is regardless whether they are a friend or family member you are close to or a complete stranger you have only met once. It may be possible to do this during your lunch break at work but you will more than likely find

Cold Calling and Selling Your Products: (Minimum: 3 hours per week)

These are in fact 2 separate activities but can sometimes mean the same thing. When you are cold calling you could either be inviting a person to an opportunity presentation or marketing your products or services, whereas in the second activity you are purely doing the latter. How much time you need to dedicate to this is entirely up to you and will depend how confident and focused you are. Despite what you have been led to believe, the core of any network marketing business are the customers so it is in your interest to make sales and build a solid customer base. This way even if you are not building a large organization you can still generate income and get referrals from your customers. You should be using your evenings and the weekends to do this.

Training: (Minimum: 30 minutes per day)

This is something your sponsor will stress the importance of and encourage that you do. It could involve reading books, listening to audio training, watching DVDs and more often than not attending training events. The great thing about training tools such as CDs and books is that you can get through them at your convenience, possibly on your commute to and from work or during your lunch break at work. Training events however take up a whole day and upwards to 3 days depending on the type of event. Some companies hold these monthly and others less or more frequently. If you plan to attend every training day available you can potentially be spending a weekend every month.

So when considering all of the above, if you really believe that you can commit 1-2 hours a week and build a successful part-time business, you may want to think twice and consider putting some more time aside otherwise you are left with a hobby, not a business.
